UOIT Ridgebacks Weekly Report: Sampogna, Vaz & Premakumar named student-athletes of the week
OSHAWA, Ont. – Sonia Sampogna, Joe Vaz and Sankavy Premakumar have been named the UOIT student-athletes of the week presented by Boston Pizza – North Oshawa for the period ending Oct. 13.
Sonia Sampogna, a second year Health Science major, scored three goals in two games for the UOIT women's soccer team as they extended their winning streak to four games. In the Ridgebacks 3-1 victory over McMaster, Sampogna struck twice which included the game winning goal. On Sunday afternoon, the Toronto native scored the lone goal of the game in the Ridgebacks 1-0 victory over Waterloo. UOIT has won six of their last seven games and has moved into a tie for third place in the OUA western conference standings with Guelph.
Joe Vaz, a second year business commerce major, scored three goals in the UOIT men’s soccer 4-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. This is the first time in program history that a player has recorded a hat-trick. Vaz would tie the game up at 1-1 in the 49th minute and go on to score the Ridgebacks third (66’) and fourth (81’) goals to secure the victory. Playing in only 11 of 14 games because of injuries, Vaz has still managed to lead UOIT in scoring with five goals.
Sankavy Premakumar, a first year commerce major, advanced to the flight four semi-finals of the OUA Championship with a straight sets victory over Rachel Barnett of McMaster. Premakumar dominated the match winning by set scores of 6-0 and 6-1. This is the first time in UOIT women’s tennis history that the team has recorded points at the provincial championship.
