Varsity athletic therapy staff are trained in the recognition, assessment, and management of concussion. Diagnosis of acute sport related concussion involves assessment of clinical symptoms, physical signs, cognitive impairment, neurobehavioural features, and sleep/wake disturbance. All Ontario Tech student-athletes involved in contact sports are required to complete Baseline ImPACT and SCAT5 testing prior to game play. Athletes competing in non-contact sports are required to complete baseline SCAT5 assessment. Upon initial diagnosis of a concussion, physical and cognitive rest are important components to facilitate recovery. A Certified Athletic Therapist will guide concussed athletes through a graded return to play and return to learn protocol in conjunction with Academic Support services and on-campus Physicians.
- Concussed athletes may be referred to Student Accessibility Services to ensure academic needs are being met throughout the recovery process.
- Campus Health Centre physician and Athletic Therapist clearance is required prior to return to competition after a concussion.
- Any athlete with a suspected concussion will be immediately removed from training/play and referred for further assessment by an Ontario Tech University Certified Athletic Therapist or Physician.
- All athletes diagnosed with a concussion will be required to proceed through a graded return to sport protocol to ensure safe return to competition. In accordance with Rowan’s Law, all varsity athletes, team support staff, and coaches will receive concussion education prior to the start of each varsity season.
- Early recognition and reporting of concussion symptoms has been demonstrated to improve outcomes both academically and athletically.
- All varsity athletes are required to complete a “Concussion Code of Conduct” prior to their season which outlines expectations regarding the recognition and management of concussion.
