OSHAWA, Ont. – Emilee Carmichael (Stouffville, Ont.) and Zhiyi Chen (Newmarket, Ont.) of the badminton team have been named UOIT student-athletes of the week for the period ending February 18.
Zhiyi Chen, a mechanical engineering student, finished the weekend with five wins over his doubles and singles play. His first singles victory was 21-5, 21-5 over Brian Hau of the Guelph Gryphons in group play, but his first match was a narrow three-game loss to Ottawa’s Cedric Hupe-Pageau 19-21, 22-20, 17-21. In men’s double action he was teamed with Ly for a 21-14, 21-13 win over Guelph, before joining his brother Sheng to defeat the Queen’s Gaels 21-15, 21-19 and Guelph 21-17, 21-5. In the 9/10th place match he also defeated Hau again, this time 21-8, 21-10.
The UOIT student-athlete of the week award is presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
