OSHAWA, Ont. - Tanmay Karnavat (Brampton, Ont.) of the men’s badminton team has been named UOIT's athlete of the week presented by Subway.
Karnavat, an electrical engineering major, teamed up with Jonas Albaira and reach UOIT’s first “A” flight semifinal of the IUCC season.
The duo continued their fine play after their OUA championship performance and had outstanding results as they reached the main round semifinals with two wins against Ryerson before losing to host team Western.
UOIT beat Ryerson 21-13, 22-20 followed by a three-set win (21-15, 20-22, 21-18) over a second Ryerson duo. The team kept the attack for most of the match and that aggression forced the Ryerson pair to make several unforced errors at critical points of the match.
Comments from the Ryerson team ranged from how much UOIT's pair has improved to "wow, your guys are on fire today" to "your team's shots were really crisp and consistent."
The UOIT athlete of the week awards are presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
