WATERLOO, Ont. – The Ontario Tech badminton program finished the team event at the 2024 YONEX Canadian University and College Badminton Championship, falling just short of finding a team win.
The Ridgebacks opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss to the UQAM Carabins where Chloe Hoang (Markham, Ont.) kicked off the championship with a 21-10, 21-7 win over Mary-Anne Ke. Joshua Nguyen (Markham, Ont.) picked up the tie's second win, taking down Christophe Sylvestre 21-5, 21-7. Finally, Jailyn Joensen (Whitby, Ont.) and Kaushik Krishnakumar Raman (Dubai, UAE) lost a tight three-set battle against Bao Quoc Anthony Nguyen and Kelly Lam.
The Toronto Varsity Blues would take the next tie, 4-1 against the Ridgebacks, where Nguyen picked up his second win of the day with a 21-10, 21-5 take down of Michael Law.
In the third tie of the team event, the Ridgebacks fell 3-2 to the Laval Rouge et Or. Nguyen continued his string of dominant showings with a 21-7, 21-9 win over Kael Boucher. Joensen would pick up a 21-6, 21-10 singles win over Alexanne Boucher.
Finally, the Ridgebacks lost 3-2 to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, with Hoang winning 21-6 and 21-11 over Sophie Caron. Nguyen would also pick up a 21-6, 21-8 victory against Alexi Letarte. Joensen and Raman would take the mixed doubles match to three sets once again but eventually fell 21-13, 11-12, 17-21.
The Ridgebacks will now turn their attention to the individual portion of the championship.
