Varsity Rowing

A note from the head coach Jenn Durward....

Rowing is a sport where you are a part of not only a team, but a lifestyle. Being a varsity student athlete is extremely hard work.  It is early mornings, it is a large time commitment, you will have to balance rowing, school and your social life (as you cannot row if your grades suffer, and some of your friends may not understand), it has high physical and mental demands, as training is continuous, in-season and off-season.

BUT….

Being a part of the team, making that commitment, you will see what you are truly made of. You will have the opportunity to exceed your perceived potential, to be challenged, to persevere, to meet other exceptional people, and make yourself stronger, better... to be a part of something awesome.

If you are up to the challenge, then the Rowing Team is for you!

TRYOUT DETAILS

Team requirements:
It is strongly suggested that athletes attend training camp in order to be eligible to compete for a spot on the team.  Practice becomes mandatory as of August 27, 2022 when we start our training camp.  Please try and sort out work schedules so that you can make at least one session a day during the weekend training camp, your coaches and teammates have made concessions to be at camp, you need to as well.  If you have any questions, please make sure you contact the Head Coach.

Ergometer standards:
Ergometer standards are set to give the coaches a benchmark of performance.   In order to be considered for the top crews you must meet the men and women’s standards.  We will be considering athletes that make the minimum camp requirement, and they will be put into crews accordingly.

Ergometer minimum standards for the 2000m will weigh heavily upon selection decisions.

Team Minimum Men 7:30 25:00

Lightweight rowers must be within 2.3kg of weight standards.  Men:  72Kg; Women 59Kg in order to test at lightweight drag factors.

ON-WATER EVALUATION

  • Body position
  • Posture
  • Balance

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • RACING IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT.  This means if you consistently miss practice or by coach decision, you will not be racing.
  • OUA Championships and Canadian University Championships.  These two regattas usually fall during midterms.  Please, as soon as you get your course syllabus you check your midterm dates and if there is a conflict please talk to your professor, as well as Craig Fisher (craig.fisher@ontariotechu.ca) and your coach. The earlier we take care of any conflicts, the better.  You will know well in advance the crews and if you are attending CURCs by the end of September.
  • Novice and varsity crews who have completed racing at the OUA Development regatta will travel home that same day, unless asked to volunteer for the Championship regatta the next day.
  • Attendance at morning in-season practices is mandatory. There will be no tolerance for consistently missing practice.
  • Athletes that miss more than one practice without a legitimate reason will be taken out of the crew.  If this occurs on a regular basis, you will be dismissed from the team, with NO REFUND.
  • Tardiness:  If you are late, you AND your crew will not go on the water and will erg --- Being late is a waste of your crew’s and coaches time.
  • Rowing specific uniforms:
    • Varsity rowers will receive an Ontario Tech Unisuit or tank to race in (this is in addition to your Ontario Tech gear)
  • Training with ETS and completing the strength and conditioning training throughout the racing season (one to two times a week) and OFF season (3-4 times a week) is expected.  If an athlete cannot make it to see the team at ETS, they will be expected to do those workouts in the FLEX on their own in addition to the ERG workouts.
  • Athletes will be required to assist and volunteer for the Rowing Exec and Team events and initiatives.  It will be noted who volunteered for each event, and it will be taken into consideration with respect to the selection of the Ontario Tech Athletic Awards
