OSHAWA, Ont. – For the first time at Ontario Tech, the women's hockey program has five OUA award recipients.
Captain
Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.) became the first Ridgeback to win the OUA most sportsmanlike award, while head coach
Justin Caruana is the first to win co-coach of the year.
"It's an honour to be recognized amongst your peers and so many amazing coaches who could have easily won this award," said Caruana. "This award truly isn't about me though. I owe this all to our players, coaches, support staff and university. Without them this would not have been possible. They need the recognition as well."
Brooke Vial (Port Moody, Ont.) and
Natalie Wozney (Whitby, Ont.) were both named second team all-stars, with this being the second straight season Wozney has been recognized with a league award. In 2019-20 she was named a first team all-star.
This season Wozney finished the shortened 12-game season with a goal and five assists.
In goal, Vial started five games for the Ridgebacks, posting a 3-2-0 record. She was also fourth in the OUA with a 1.40 goals-against average and second with a .960 save percentage.
Zoe McGee (Kanata, Ont.) was named to the all-rookie team, finishing her campaign with a 2-5-0 record over seven games. Her two victories were both shutouts.
"I am extremely proud and happy for all our award winners," said Caruana. "They all put in so much time and effort and great to see them get recognized for their accomplishments. It's great for our program and university."
Of the four players receiving OUA recognition, Wozney and Johnston are part of the 2022 graduating class, while McGee and Vial will be returning to the Ridgebacks in September.
