Ridgebacks pick up pair of wins on Day 2 of OUA curling championship

GUELPH, Ont. – The Ontario Tech men's curling team improved to 3-1 on Friday at the 2020 OUA curling championship after defeating the Algoma Thunderbirds and Ryerson Rams.

The Ridgebacks opened with four in the first end, followed by a steal to go ahead early on Algoma to start the day. Up 6-1 at the break, the Ridgebacks conceded a single in the fifth before taking three with hammer to win 9-2.

They followed that with a 10-3 victory over Ryerson. Ontario Tech picked up a big five in the second end to take a 5-1 lead early. After a three in the fourth they found themselves ahead 8-2 at the break. Needing only two more ends, the Ridgebacks clinched it with a deuce in the sixth.

On the women's side the women opened Day 2 with a 4-2 loss to Windsor. No more than a point was scored in an end all game, with it sitting in a 2-2 tie after five ends. The Lancers scored one in six and stole one in seven before taking the game.

Ontario Tech followed that with a 5-2 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a game that saw three blanked ends to start. Lakehead stole one in the fourth to find the scoreboard first. The Ridgebacks put up four in the fifth and one in the seventh before running Lakehead out of rocks in the eighth.

Saturday is a key day for both teams as they look to clinch a spot in the quarter-finals on Sunday. The final round-robin games are Sunday morning, but a pair of wins for both teams would all but clinch a quarter-final berth.
