Men’s curling earns first victory of OUA championship

WATERLOO, Ont. – As the OUA curling championship heads into its final day the UOIT men earned their first win of the tournament.

It was a huge 13-2 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds to open Saturday play. They started with four with hammer, followed by a steal of two. In the fourth after a blank they stole another three points putting the game all but out of reach.

They followed that with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to the McMaster Marauders. Leading 4-3 heading into the eighth end the Ridgebacks saw the Marauders score two with hammer to earn a 5-4 victory.

The men hold a 1-4 record, needing to earn at least two wins in their final games and get some help from other teams to qualify for the medal round.

On the women's side, UOIT dropped both games. Carleton defeated the Ridgebacks 6-4 in the morning draw followed by a 7-6 win over Windsor to wrap up the day. Unfortunately, with Lakehead winning 6-4 over Waterloo in the 5:30 p.m. draw the Ridgebacks were eliminated from medal contention.

On the final day of round-robin play the men face Ryerson and Queen's, while the women play Lakehead at 11 a.m. in their final game.
