Campbell and Meyers join Ridgebacks men’s hockey staff

OSHAWA, Ont. – UOIT men's hockey head coach Curtis Hodgins is pleased to announce the addition of assistant coach Scott Campbell and Sean Meyers in a hockey operations role.

Campbell will benefit the squad greatly as he brings plenty of experience to help on the back end. He is a defensive minded coach by nature as he spent 13 years playing defence professionally in Europe.

"I am very excited to be named assistant coach of the UOIT Ridgebacks," said Campbell. "I am excited to bring my knowledge and passion for this great game to the program at UOIT. After talking with Curtis, I feel that we see the game in a very similar way."

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Campbell and his family moved to Scarborough when he was three years old. He was a first-round draft pick of the Peterborough Petes in 1988, leading to him playing five seasons in the OHL with the Petes and Niagara Falls Thunder, before moving back to Britain to play professionally. Campbell played pro in England, Scotland and Italy, as well as internationally for Great Britain.

Campbell laced up his skates for more than 300 professional games, racking up 129 points. He has won a championship in all three European leagues he played in, as well as a world championship bronze medal with Great Britain.

"I am very excited to add Scott to our coaching staff," said Hodgins. "He is a very detailed coach who loves to teach and work on making each player better. His background as a defenceman in the pro ranks will be a great fit for our program as he focuses on working with our blue line group on a daily basis. "

Since retiring, Campbell moved back to Canada and currently lives in Bowmanville. He has stayed busy by coaching AAA hockey in Clarington, as well as running his own hockey development and skills program since 2014.

On the hockey operations front, Meyers joins the Ridgebacks in a role that will see him assist with scouting and recruiting players for UOIT, track and analyze game data and assist with other team management behind the scenes.

"I am super excited to be a part of this Ridgeback season, and I look forward to playing a role in the growth and development of this hockey program," said Meyers.

A Whitby native, Meyers is a Laurentian University grad that worked with the Laurentian Voyageurs from 2013-15, followed by the Oshawa Generals in 2017-18. He was also a scout for the Espanola Express of the NOJHL in 2017-18.

Meyers is looking forward to assisting in the development and growth of the Ridgebacks up-and-coming hockey program, leaning on his years of diverse experience on the business side of hockey to the program.

"Sean is a very welcome addition to our program," said Hodgins. "He is a young man who has a tremendous passion for the game and an eye towards working in the industry in the long term. He will assist myself in all facets of the program including recruitment, travel arrangements, fundraising, analytics and much more."

The men's hockey team is back in action at home this weekend when they host the Ryerson Rams on Friday and York Lions on Saturday.
