OSHAWA, Ont. – Anthony Latina of Scarborough, Ont. was the overtime hero for UOIT as the Ridgebacks beat Laurier 4-3 for their first win of the preseason Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre.
Two minutes into the overtime frame, Latina would intercept a pass and go top shelf to beat Laurier goaltender Colin Furlong for the game-winning goal.
The goal was a little bit of redemption for the Ridgebacks as Laurier tied it up at three goals apiece off a Ridgeback turnover, as Jeremy Pullara streaked in alone and beat UOIT goaltender
Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, Ont.).
After a 6-2 loss to Ryerson, the Ridgebacks came out flying as
Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) opened up scoring in the first period on the power play, with UOIT outshooting Laurier 12-2 at the time.
Danny Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and
Keaton Holinaty (Hardisty, Alta.) would add second period goals for UOIT, but Laurier would bounce back with three of their own in the period to tie the game at 3-3. The teams were scoreless in the third which forced the 3-on-3 overtime period.
Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) had a standout performance with two assists on the power play, while Robinson finished the night with a goal and an assist.
Teichmann ended up making 32 saves in the Ridgebacks first victory of the preseason.
UOIT will continue their exhibition schedule with back-to-back games in Thunder Bay against the Lakehead Thunderwolves beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m.
