Ridgebacks edged by Ravens in first exhibition game

OTTAWA, Ont. – A late third period goal by Katia Boulianne was the difference in Sunday's exhibition game as Boulianne and the Carleton Ravens topped the UOIT women's hockey team 4-3.

Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.) opened the scoring for UOIT 7:49 into the second period with an unassisted goal, her first as a Ridgeback. She would finish with three points, two goals and an assist.

Just 37 seconds later Boulianne scored her first of the game to tie the game 1-1.

Johnston notched her second of the game for UOIT, assisted by Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) and Mariah Wilson (Cobourg, Ont.), at the 11:19 mark of the second period. With the goals by Johnston the Ridgebacks found themselves ahead 2-1 through two periods, but were being outshot 31-20.

"We definitely had a solid effort after a long travel day and Carleton was waiting for us and had already played a handful of games," said UOIT head coach Justin Caruana. "We saw some good things and some bad things. This week we will get back to work and continue to build on the good."

In the third period the Ravens offence came to life and Jamie Wainman's goal just 2:45 into the frame evened the game up again 2-2.

Penalty trouble cost the Ridgebacks down the stretch as Carleton's first power play goal of the night came at 7:03 of the third period from Annie-Pier Tremblay, the final one was Boulianne's with 1:18 to go in regulation.

UOIT did score between those two man-advantage goals, as Natasha Tymcio (Caledon, Ont.) beat Katelyn Steele at the 15:44 mark, assisted by Johnston.

Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Que.) played the full game in goal for the Ridgebacks in the loss.

The next preseason action for UOIT is this Thursday night as they travel to Toronto to face the Varsity Blues. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
