NORTH YORK, Ont. – For the first time in program history, the UOIT men's hockey team went 2-0 at the York Invitational as they defeated the hosts 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Traditionally the Ridgebacks have not performed well at the tournament with last year being a prime example as they lost their opening game 9-2 to Toronto. But coming off a year where the team won their first OUA playoff series, the Ridgebacks seem to be playing with a lot of confidence heading into their 10
th season.
Transferring from St. Thomas University,
Tyson Teichmann saw his first action of the preseason in goal for UOIT and made six saves in each period. The Belleville native allowed one York power play goal that came four minutes in the final period.
Loren Ulett (Port Perry, Ont.) and
Mitch Bennett (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) each had two goals while
Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) rounded out the scoring.
Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) and
Tyler Mayea (Burlington, Ont.) also had multi-point games with two assists apiece.
UOIT was 1-for-4 on the power play while York went 0-for-4. The UOIT special teams unit killed off all 13 opponent's power play opportunities this weekend.
In the consolation final Ryerson beat Toronto 2-1.
UOIT will hit the road next Thursday for an exhibition game against the Western Mustangs in London. The Mustangs will be looking for their first win of the preseason after losses against Ryerson (5-2) and Laurier (4-2).
