TORONTO, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team have ended their preseason on a high note after shutting out the Ryerson Rams 1-0 on Wednesday night.
After opening with losses to Atlantic University Sport (AUS) opponents and a loss to the Canadian Women's Hockey League's (CWHL) Toronto Furies, the Ridgebacks earned a win in their first game against an Ontario University Sport (OUA) team this preseason.
"Tonight was a solid team effort to earn the win against Ryerson," said UOIT head coach
Justin Caruana. "We've been working hard all preseason and have been building positive momentum as we prepare for the regular season. There are always things to improve on, but we're moving in a positive direction heading into our game next week against York to open conference play."
The lone goal of the game came 13:21 into the second period from
Shanelle Doucette (Bowmanville, Ont.), with the assist going to
Jenna Carter (Whitby, Ont.).
In goal
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) and
Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) split time in goal to earn the shutout for the Ridgebacks. Hughes made 21 saves, while Campbell turned aside 18 Ryerson shots.
Sydney Authier and Ally Sarna made 18 and 12 saves respectively for the Rams in the loss.
Both teams were each 0-for-3 on the power play, while Ryerson outshot the Ridgebacks 39-31.
UOIT has the week off before the OUA regular season, which they open on Oct. 15 at York before their home opener on Oct. 16 against the Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop at York is 2 p.m., while the home opener will be at 3:30 p.m.
