OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team went to double overtime for the second time in less than 24 hours on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Ridgebacks the result ended the same way with the York Lions leaving the Campus Ice Centre with a 2-1 victory.
 
On Friday, UOIT dropped a 3-2 decision to the RMC Paladins.
 
York's Greg Milner scored the game-winner 2:24 into three-on-three double overtime, beating UOIT goaltender Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) for just the second time in the game. Derek Sheppard and Scott Feser added assists.
 
Both goaltenders were solid, allowing just one first period goal apiece in regulation time. Freshman Mack Shields, who played five seasons in the WHL, earned the win.
 
Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) scored the Ridgebacks lone goal, tying the game up at 1-1 with 27 seconds remaining in the first period. Tyler Mayea (Burlington, Ont.) and Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) picked up assists on the play. Freshman Daniel Nikandrov scored the game's opening goal for York 11 minutes into the game.
 
UOIT wraps up preseason action with a 2-1-2 record which includes splitting action with the Lions.
 
The Ridgebacks will be in the spotlight for their conference opener as the Ottawa Gee-Gees hockey program returns to the OUA. Ottawa's home opener will take place on Friday, Oct. 7 at the Ottawa Minto Sports Complex with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. The game will also be featured on OUA.tv.
 
UOIT's home opener will take place on Friday, Oct. 14 against the Laurentian Voyageurs. It will be country night at the Campus Ice Centre with the first 150 fans receiving a free foam Ridgeback cowboy hat and a post-game concert taking place at Shagwell's on the Ridge.
