OUA Women's CurlingRidgebacks start championship with back-to-back losses GUELPH, Ont. – Separate games, but very similar stories for the UOIT women's curling team on opening day of the OUA championship.
Tied through seven ends in both of their games on Thursday, the UOIT women's curling team was unable to score without hammer as they started the championship with a pair of losses.
Their first game of the day was against Brock at 1:30 p.m. Starting the game with hammer, the Ridgebacks were forced to take one in the first end.
Brock answered with two in the second and after a blank in the third stole a point in both the fourth and fifth ends to go ahead 4-1.
In the sixth UOIT only scored one with hammer, but in the seventh stole two points to tie the game 4-4 with an end to play. Unfortunately the Badgers got the lone point they needed with hammer to hand the Ridgebacks a loss in their opener.
UOIT didn't have much time off before their next game, which was the next draw of the day at 5 p.m. against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Ridgebacks opened the game with a two-point steal in the first end, but Toronto answered back with two of their own with hammer in the second. The Varsity Blues stole two in the third to go ahead 4-2 through three.
At the break UOIT and Toronto were knotted at fours as the Ridgebacks got their deuce in the fourth.
A team that has given up very few ends of more than two points all season, the fifth end was a rarity for the Ridgebacks who allowed the Varsity Blues to score three with hammer to go ahead 7-4.
UOIT, similar to their earlier game, would be down a point heading into the seventh end. They stole a lone point in seven after their deuce in six to tie the game 7-7, but again were unable to steal a second straight end as Toronto picked up the 8-7 victory.
The Ridgebacks are back in action early on Friday as they face the Algoma Thunderbirds at 8:30 a.m.
