Men’s hockey split U.S. road trip with win over Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – After a tough loss on Saturday, the UOIT men's hockey team rebounded with a well-deserved 4-2 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins on Sunday in Buffalo.

Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.) opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally 5:55 into the first period.

Adam Campagnolo (Waterloo, Ont.) made it 2-0 Ridgebacks with 4:01 to play in the opening period. Ryan Doucette (Waterloo, Ont.) earned the assist on the goal.

In the second period Jeff Supryka cut the UOIT lead in half with a power-play goal for the Golden Griffins at the 4:33 mark.

Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.), with an assist to Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.), then reinstated the Ridgebacks two-goal lead with 12:01 to play in the middle frame. The Ridgebacks weren't done as Campagnolo scored his second of the game at the 10:53 mark to put UOIT ahead 4-1 through two.

Ralph Cuddemi scored another power-play marker for Canisius just 2:02 into the third, but that was as close as they got to the Ridgebacks, who won their second game of the preseason.

Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) turned aside 36 Golden Griffins' shots in the victory.

Reilly Turner allowed four goals on 14 shots in 30:53 of ice time in the loss for Canisius, while Simon Hofley made four saves in the remaining 27:54 in goal.

In Rochester earlier in the weekend against the RIT Tigers, UOIT struggled against RIT as the Tigers picked up a 9-1 victory. Alex Derlis (Campbellcroft, Ont.) scored the lone goal in the third period, with Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) and James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) getting the assist. O'Neill stopped 28 shots in the loss.

The Ridgebacks are now done their preseason play as they prepare for the OUA regular season, which gets underway Friday, Oct. 9 when the McGill Redmen visit Oshawa. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Ice Centre.
