OUA Men's Hockey: UOIT defeated Windsor 3-2 (Shootout) OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team wrapped up preseason action in style as they came up with a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday.
After 10 minutes of scoreless play in overtime, UOIT goalkeeper
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) stole the show as he came up with back-to-back spectacular glove saves to keep the Lancers off the board in the shootout. After a third Windsor shooter missed,
Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) was able to close out the game for UOIT as he beat Windsor's Parker Van Buskirk (Windsor, Ont.) for the win.
The game was sent to overtime after Windsor's Matt Fuller (London, Ont.) scored an unassisted goal from the point with only 1:25 left in the game.
Brett Varrin (Ottawa, Ont.) and
James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) were the goal scorers for UOIT. Varrin recorded the game's opening goal five minutes in, with
Jordan Ramsay (Pickering, Ont.) and
Mike Whiteside (Ajax, Ont.) picking up assists. Woodcroft's goal came with only seven seconds to go in the second frame. He was set up by
Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.), who used his speed the entire night to frustrate the Lancers' defence.
Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.) picked up the second assist on the play.
The officials were busy in the game as the teams' combined for 70 penalty minutes and a game misconduct. However, only one power play was scored when Windsor lit the lamp in the second period.
UOIT would outshoot Windsor 40-28.
The Ridgebacks will shift their focus to the regular season that begins up North this weekend when the team travels to Sudbury and North Bay. UOIT will open up the year against Laurentian on Friday night followed by an evening affair on Saturday against the Nipissing Lakers.
