Ridgebacks top the Rams in a shootout OUA Women's Hockey: UOIT defeated Ryerson 2-1 (Shootout) OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team improved to 2-0 in preseason action with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Ryerson Rams at the Campus Ice Centre Thursday night.
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) stole the show in the shootout as she stopped all nine shooters she faced. Freshman
Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.) set up Charette for the win in the ninth round, as she would eventually break the deadlock with an impressive move that beat Ally Sarna, who had stopped the previous eight shooters she faced.
Throughout the game, both team's defensive units did a good job of limiting their opponent's scoring chances as shots finished up 17-15 in favour of the Ridgebacks.
The pair of goals during regulation came in the first period. Ryerson opened up scoring 17:40 into the period, when first year forward Alex Rodriguez (Toronto) took a feed from Kayla Karbonik (St. Andrews, Man.) and Emily Marks (Courtice, Ont.). UOIT would respond just over a minute later as
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) scored with the assist coming from
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.).
The two teams went scoreless for the remainder of the game, failing to convert on a combined 10 power play opportunities.
The Ridgebacks will be back on home ice on Saturday, September 27 against Brock University. Game time for UOIT's homecoming event is at 7:30 p.m.
