UOIT shuts out Ryerson 4-0 in Toronto
OUA Women's Hockey: UOIT defeated Ryerson 4-0
TORONTO – The UOIT women's hockey team earned a 4-0 shutout over the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens on Thursday night.
UOIT goaltender Tori Campbell (Lethbridge, Alta.) stopped all 26 shots she faced as she picked up her second career shutout. In two games against the Rams this season, the Ridgebacks have recorded two shutout victories with Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) earning the other.
Despite getting a penalty early in the opening period, the Ridgebacks were the first team to get on the scoreboard as Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) scored a shorthanded marker. With 20 points (eight goals and 12 assists) on the year, Gibson is fifth in OUA league scoring.
UOIT would continue to light the lamp with two more goals in the frame as Gillian Morgan (Ajax, Ont.) and Zoe Battie (Nanaimo, BC) scored for the Ridgebacks. Battie's goal was her first of the year.
Midway through the second period, Ryerson had a golden opportunity to get back into the game as they were awarded a penalty shot, but Campbell managed to keep the puck out of the net to keep UOIT up by three goals.
With six seconds to go in the period, UOIT freshman Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) scored her third goal of the year.
Ryerson came out strong in the third period outshooting the Ridgebacks 10-3, but they could not find a way to beat Campbell as UOIT skated off with their ninth win of the year.
In 54 shorthanded situations on the road this season, UOIT has only allowed five goals.
With the win, UOIT (9-7-1) moves into fifth place with 19 points. Western (8-6-1) is trailing the Ridgebacks by two points but have two games in hand. Ryerson has dropped four straight games and sits in tenth place with a record of 5-11-0.
