Ridgebacks struggle against Bouwhuis once again

OUA Women's Hockey: Waterloo defeated UOIT 2-1

WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team's struggles continued in Waterloo as the Warriors, led by goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis, earned a 2-1 victory over the Ridgebacks on Saturday afternoon.

In three seasons in the OUA, Bouwhuis has taken her game to the next level when playing against the Ridgebacks as she has posted a 7-0-0 record with a goals against average of 1.00. Her play on Saturday afternoon was no exception as she made 23 saves and allowed only one UOIT goal against.

Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) was the lone goal scorer for UOIT, as she slipped one past Bouwhuis off a broken play midway through the first period. Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) added an assist on the play, as she has recorded eight points in her last six games.

Carolyn Burke would score both Waterloo goals, including the game winner with just under three minutes left in the third period.

Trailing 2-1 with two minutes left on the clock, it looked as if the line of Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.), Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) and Victoria MacKenzie (Toronto, Ont.) had tied the game, but the referee waved off the goal blowing the down the play early.

Cassie Charette made 19 saves for the Ridgebacks in the losing effort as UOIT outshot Waterloo 24-21. Waterloo was 1-for-5 with the man advantage while the Ridgebacks were shutout on their two attempts.

UOIT remains in fifth place in the OUA standings with an 8-6-1 record, two points ahead of Western (7-6-1) and Windsor (7-6-1).

The Ridgebacks will wrap up the 2013 portion of their schedule on Sunday night when they travel back to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks (12-2-0). Laurier is fifth in the CIS national rankings and come into the game on an eight game winning streak.
