UOIT continues to slide in Guelph
OUA Men's Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 8-2
GUELPH, Ont. – On a night where Marlin Muylaert's 1994 OUAA men's hockey championship winning team was honoured, his current team was blown out as the Guelph Gryphons skated to an 8-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks.
With the University of Guelph, Muylaert coached the Gryphons to eight divisional titles and two OUAA championships including the 1994 team.
In Saturday's contest, the Gryphons got off to a great start scoring two power play goals early on as defenders Jake Logan (Napanee, Ont.) and Matt Pasztor (Langton, Ont.) were sent to the box. Guelph would add two more goals 16 seconds apart with two minutes left in the period to take a 4-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.
UOIT starting goaltender Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) allowed four goals on 13 Guelph first period shots and was pulled for back-up Jesse Raymond.
Despite outshooting the Gryphons over the next two periods, the Ridgebacks were never able to get back in the game as Guelph scored four more goals including three more on the power play.
Standing out for UOIT on the scoresheet were forwards Jordan Ramsay (Pickering, Ont.) and Mike Whiteside (Ajax, Ont.). Ramsay scored both of UOIT's goals which were his first two of the season with Whiteside picking up a pair of assists.
Freshman Kyle Neuber led the way for the Gryphons as he recorded a hat-trick and an assist for a four-point night. John Collins, Teal Burns, James Merrett, Niklas Huard and Nicholas Trecapelli were the other goal scorers for Guelph.
Guelph's power play unit was spectacular as they scored five goals on eight attempts. 15 of Guelph's 16 power play goals this season have come on their Olympic sized home ice.
In their last three games in all of which were losses, UOIT has been outscored 20-5. The Ridgebacks fall to 3-7-1 while Guelph improves to 6-5-1.
UOIT will be back home next weekend when they host Lakehead for back-to-back games at the Campus Ice Centre. Game time for game one on Friday night is 7:30 p.m.
