Ridgebacks beat Toronto in a penalty filled affair
OUA Women's Hockey: UOIT defeated Toronto 2-1
TORONTO – The UOIT women's hockey team earned four points on the road in their opening weekend as they defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 2-1.
The Ridgebacks are off to their best start in program history with a pair of 2-1 wins over Queen's (Friday) and Toronto (Saturday).
Tied 1-1 with just under three minutes to go in the game, UOIT's Hamilton connection would strike as
Nicole LoPresti took a beautiful pass from Sam Forchielli up the wing and managed to beat the Toronto goaltender Nicole Kesteris for her first goal of the season.
Down the stretch, UOIT stepped up their game on defence and limited Toronto's opportunities. UOIT would go on and pick up the one-goal victory.
Tori Campbell (Lethbridge, Alta.) made 22 saves for her second win of the season. Campbell has a 0.96 goals against average in her first two OUA games.
UOIT captain
Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) had the first goal of the game as she buried a snap shot in the first period. Alie Brind'Amour-McClure was the lone goal scorer for Toronto.
The teams showed some ill will towards one another for an early game in the season as the game featured 28 penalties called. With a number of power play opportunities, the penalty kill units had a chance to shine as the teams combined to go 1-for-17 with the man-advantage.
Toronto outshot UOIT 23-20 in the loss.
UOIT will look to extend their winning streak next weekend in southwestern Ontario. The Ridgebacks will take on the Windsor Lancers (Saturday) and Western Mustangs (Sunday). Both games are at 4 p.m.
