Charette and Stoughton named student-athletes of the week
OSHAWA, Ont. – Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) and Jessie Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.) have been named the UOIT student-athletes of the week presented by Boston Pizza North Oshawa for the period ending Jan. 17.
Charette, a biological science major, appeared in her third straight game on Saturday, making 25 saves for her second win of the season. The Ridgebacks defeated the Brock Badgers 4-2. On Sunday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to the No. 1 ranked Guelph Gryphons at the Campus Ice Centre, Charette turned aside 29 shots to give UOIT a shot at handing Guelph their fourth loss of the season.
Stoughton, a criminology and justice studies major, scored 1:44 into overtime on Saturday night to lift the UOIT men’s hockey team to a 5-4 victory over the Concordia Stingers at the Campus Ice Centre. The win tied the program’s high of 12 set during the 2010-11 season. The goal was also Stoughton’s 40th of his career and sixth game winner.
This weekend the men’s hockey team is on the road to face the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night before battling the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday in Sudbury.
The women’s hockey team continues their home stand against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. before hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
