OSHAWA, Ont. – Emilee Carmichael (Stouffville, Ont.) and Zhiyi Chen (Newmarket, Ont.) of the badminton team have been named UOIT student-athletes of the week for the period ending February 18.
Carmichael, an applied and industrial mathematics student, had four wins over the weekend at the OUA badminton championship hosted by UOIT. Alongside teammate Brittney Yiu, the duo won the program’s first women’s doubles match of the season 21-10 and 21-11 over Guelph’s Mady Johannes and Stephnie Rintoul. In mixed doubles she won three matches, the first coming with Alfonse Ly over the Guelph Gryphons 21-16, 21-18. Carmichael also won two mixed doubles matches with Sheng Chen. The first over the Queen’s Gaels 21-13, 21-13 and second over the Gryphons 21-11, 21-13.
The UOIT student-athlete of the week award is presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
