OSHAWA, Ont. – Tyler Mayea (Burlington, Ont.) of the men's hockey team has been named the UOIT student-athlete of the week for the period ending January 14.
 
Mayea, a business major, played a key role in the Ridgebacks earning a weekend split on their northern road trip. Coming off a 2-0 loss on Friday night, the Ridgebacks found themselves down two goals midway through the third period on Saturday, but the 6'3 defenceman got the scoring started for UOIT with a 4-on-4 marker to cut Laurentian's lead to one. He finished the night with an assist on the eventual game-winning goal by Bryce Fiske as the Ridgebacks held on for a 3-2 victory.
 
The men's hockey team returns home this weekend for a Friday night rematch against the Nipissing Lakers before hosting the McGill Redmen on Sunday at noon. Friday is the UOIT Student Union's Hockey Night where Hunter the Ridgeback will be trying to break the Guinness World Record for most high fives in a minute by a mascot and a student will have a chance to shoot for $10,000 in the second intermission.
 
On Sunday, the Ridgebacks hockey teams will be hosting their third annual Bell Let's Talk games at the Campus Ice Centre. The doubleheader is scheduled to start 12:30 p.m.
 
The UOIT student-athlete of the week award is presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
