Victoria Savage (Woodbridge, Ont.) of the women’s soccer team has been named the UOIT student-athlete of the week for the period ending Aug. 27.
Savage, a fourth-year physics major, helped the Ridgebacks to their first back-to-back victories to begin a season in program history.
On Saturday, the goalkeeper made several key second half saves to keep UOIT within striking distance of the Carleton Ravens in their 4-3 victory. She stood tall with six saves on the afternoon to earn the win.
Sunday saw the team finish their road trip in the nation’s capital against the always-tough Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Ridgebacks earned a 1-0 win thanks to a strong performance by Savage as she earned her first career shutout. The goalkeeper stopped all eight shots on target that came her way over the 90 minute match.
Through two games played, Savage sits third in the province in total saves (14) to open the season.
The women’s soccer team will hit the pitch next on Saturday, Sept. 2 as they host the Trent Excalibur for their 2017 home opener. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
The UOIT athlete of the week award is presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
