Ridgebacks move ice pads mid-game, fall to Toronto in OT

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech men's hockey lost to Toronto 5-4 in overtime on Friday night in one of the most unique games in Campus Ice Centre history.

The Ridgebacks started the the evening celebrating the life of Bob Baun, a legendary Toronto Maple Leaf and larger than life figure on campus, who touched the lives of hundreds of student-athletes at Ontario Tech. The school unveiled a plaque in his honour in the Campus Ice Centre, and Brian Baun dropped the puck prior to the game.

The men's hockey team also honoured several graduating seniors including Sean Ross (Bracebridge, Ont.), Liam Hurley (Cambridge, Ont.), Ryley Lanthier (Surrey, B.C.) and Evan White (St. John's, N.L.) and athletic trainers Seth Christoffersen, Michael Novielli and Arvin Tadjbakhsh were also honoured for their contributions.

When the puck dropped, Toronto took an early lead with a goal from Nicholas Wong six minutes into the opening period, and caught the Ridgebacks still reeling with another from Cole Purboo. Gabriel Bernier (Victoriaville, Que.) stepped up for a goal with the Ridgebacks midway through the period, and Sam Gillis (Sydney, N.S.) leveled the game 2-2 headed into the first intermission.

During a routine rink flood during intermission, a zamboni experienced technical difficulties and left a several inch deep gash in the ice that rendered the rink unusable. After repeated attempts to fill the damage, the call was made to move the game to Ice Pad 2 at the Campus Ice Centre mid game. When the game the resumed, the Ridgebacks came flying out of the gate with a goal from Ben Roode (Dartmouth, N.S.) and quickly found another on a power play from Justin Svenson (Île-des-Chênes, Man.).

Nick Grima would bring the Varsity Blues within one half way through the third period, and with four seconds left, Owen Robinson tied it up to send the game into overtime where Zack Smith would win it less than two minutes into the extra frame.

The Ridgebacks will now head out onto the road for their final games of the season, starting this Saturday when they take on the York Lions.
