On Saturday afternoon, the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks men's hockey team took on the McGill Redbirds in their home opener. After a 60-minute back-and-forth affair, the Ridgebacks fell 3-2 in overtime.
 
After a scoreless opening period, McGill forward Caiden Daley broke the tie six minutes into the second period. Evan White (St. John's, N.L.) evened the game at one a piece later in the period, thanks to great passing by Andrew Siriyuth (Kingston, Ont.) and Cullen McLean (Whitby, Ont.).
 
First-year forward Gabriel Bernier (Victoriaville Que.) broke the 1-1 tie 48 seconds into the third period. McGill would fight back, tie the game halfway through the final period, and force overtime.
 
McGill forward Eric Uba would be the hero for the Redbirds as he scored the winning goal four minutes into the sudden-death overtime period. Ridgebacks goalie Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) finished Saturday afternoon's loss with 21 saves. 
 
Ontario Tech's next game will be on Sunday, Oct. 23, in Oshawa against the Concordia Stingers. Puck drop is set for 3 pm.
