GUELPH, Ont. – In a must-win situation on Sunday afternoon, the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks men's curling team fell 5-3 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves to end their run at the OUA curling championship.
Ontario Tech stole a single to open the game, with Lakehead scoring back-to-back singles in the third and fourth ends to take a 2-1 lead. The Ridgebacks tied the game 2-2 in the fifth before giving up a game-changing three points in the sixth.
With hammer in the seventh they were held to a single point and were run out of rocks in the eighth. They ended their OUA championship run with a 3-4 record.
The women's team also finished with a 3-4 record, but ended on a positive note as they topped the Algoma Thunderbirds 6-2.
Algoma stole a point off the Ridgebacks in the opening end before scoring a deuce in the second. The Thunderbirds were held to one in the third as the teams entered the break tied 2-2. Ontario Tech scored two with hammer in five before stealing a single point in both the sixth and seventh ends before running the Thunderbirds out of rocks in the eighth end.
Saturday night the OUA quarter-final round will take place with a champion being crowned Monday in Guelph.
