Ridgebacks suffer heartbreaking loss to Gaels

KINGSTON, Ont. – The playoff picture looks bleak for the UOIT women's hockey team after a 4-3 loss on Thursday morning to the Queen's Gaels.

The Ridgebacks didn't hold the lead at all in the game, but came from behind twice two tie it, with the eventual game-winning goal by Hannah De Coutere with just over two minutes in regulation.

By not earning a point in the game, UOIT now needs the Waterloo Warriors to end their season with four losses in regulation and the Ridgebacks need to end the year with a victory.

UOIT had a three-game win streak going into Thursday as they climbed up the standings, but will need to rebound next week against the Brock Badgers to end things on a positive note.

Waterloo faces the Ryerson Rams on Saturday before the Western Mustangs on Sunday. The Ridgebacks are off until next weekend when the travel to St. Catharines to face the Brock Badgers on Friday, Feb. 15.
  • After Addi Halladay opened the scoring late in the first period for Queen's it was Mariah Wilson (Cobourg, Ont.) who knotted the game at a goal apiece with a power play marker 1:35 into the second period.
• Back-to-back goals in under 30 seconds by Julia McDonnell and Katrina Manoukarakis put the Gaels up 3-1 midway through the second period.
Mia Rogers (Keswick, Ont.) buried a perfect pass by Alex Frigon (Dartmouth, N.S.) to cut the lead to one before the final 20 minutes.
• Another power play marker came for the Ridgebacks off Marissa Murphy's (Kingston, Ont.) stick 7:17 into the third period. UOIT finished the game 2-for-3 on the man advantage.
• De Coutere scored her first goal of the season with 2:03 to go in regulation.
Brooke Vial (Port Moody, B.C.) made 21 saves in the loss for UOIT.
• Stephanie Pascal stopped 18 of 21 Ridgebacks shots.
