WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT men's and women's curling teams are hoping to earn their first victory on Friday after a winless day to open the five-day OUA curling championship.
In the opening draw of play the women fell 9-2 to the Waterloo Warriors in five ends. Waterloo scored three with hammer in the second end, before stealing two and four in the following ends to go ahead 9-0 before scoring two of their own points in the fifth to end the game.
Following the opening ceremony both Ridgeback teams were in action.
The men began their weekend against the Warriors, holding them to one with hammer in the opening end, but they were also held to one to sit tied 1-1 after two. After two points for Waterloo in the third end they eventually stole their way to an 8-1 win over UOIT.
Also on the ice, the women faced the host Laurier Golden Hawks, struggling to score again. Laurier opened with a steal of two before the Ridgebacks scored a single point.
The Ridgebacks again gave up a deuce before scoring a single point. That was followed by Laurier scoring three points over the sixth and seventh ends to earn a 7-2 victory.
Day 2 opens at 8 a.m. for both UOIT squads with the women facing Toronto and men playing Trent.
