Ridgebacks sweep Campus Cup for third straight year

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Campus Cups have found a home at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), as the Ridgebacks have now swept three-straight over the cross-campus rival Durham Lords.

The annual event, held during orientation week, features two 40-minute matches between the UOIT and Durham College varsity men's and women's soccer teams.

UOIT became the first school to sweep the event in 2016 and has followed that with two more years of success on the pitch.

In the women's match, which followed a brief ceremony re-opening Vaso's Field as an artificial turf field, the Ridgebacks marched to a 3-0 victory.

Rhiannon Kissel (Peterborough, Ont.) opened the scoring, tapping home a loose ball in front after Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) nearly went bar-down after cutting down the right side of the pitch.

The score stayed at 1-0 at halftime and Kissel's tally stood up as the game-winning goal.

To cap off the evening, in front of roughly 2,000 students, Carlos Edic (Toronto, Ont.) scored in the sixth round of penalty kicks to give the Ridgebacks the victory after neither team scored during regulation time of the match – despite both teams hitting the crossbar at least once.
"It was a great evening from start to finish," said UOIT athletic director Scott Barker. "From the pre-game activities with UOIT Student Union (USU) in the Campus Fieldhouse to the pre-game barbecue and the overall on-field event, I think it was a great experience for our students. That is what it's all about and in the end, we won both matches, which is a bonus. We hope our students continue to enjoy these opportunities to get involved on campus during their time at UOIT."

The Ridgebacks will now flip the switch back to conference play as they prepare for the Queen's Gaels on Friday night at home. Kick off for the women's match is 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7:15 p.m.
