PITTSBURGH, Ont. – After starting their preseason with a victory over the York Lions, the UOIT women's hockey team fell 6-1 to Robert Morris on Saturday night.
In front of 368 fans for their exhibition game, the Ridgebacks fell behind early with goals by Angelica Diffendal and Kirsten Welsh putting the Colonials ahead 2-0 in the first period.
With all three goalies playing a period, starter
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) took the loss for UOIT. She made 13 saves in the opening 20 minutes.
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Ont.) allowed two goals by Jaycee Gebhard and Mackenzie Krasowski on 20 shots in the second period.
Amber Rennie pushed the Colonials lead to 5-0 at the 8:56 mark of the third.
Nicole Zabel (Palmerston, Ont.), assisted by
Jillian Banks (Barrie, Ont.), broke the Robert Morris shutout with 8:06 to go in the third period.
The goal came too late as Diffendal added her second of the game to give the Colonials a five-goal victory.
Brooke Vial (Port Moody, B.C.) made 13 stops in the third period for UOIT.
The Ridgebacks now have two more preseason games before opening their OUA regular season against the Nipissing Lakers on October 12.
