Ridgeback curlers have an up and down week at provincials

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The UOIT men's and women's curling teams started their week off with a bang at the OUA curling championship but faltered down the stretch as they failed to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The UOIT men's team missed out on a berth in the playoff round by one game finishing the round robin with a 2-4 record. With a shot at making the playoffs, the Ridgebacks were leading the undefeated Western Mustangs 3-1 after four ends in their final game. Unfortunately for UOIT, Western stormed back and outscored them 6-2 over the next four ends to win 7-5.

Western (6-0), along with Laurier (3-3), Laurentian (3-3) and Ryerson (3-3) advanced to the playoffs out of Ridgebacks' pool.

The Brock Badgers would end up winning the championship for the first time in over a decade. The squad, who finished the tournament with a 6-3 record after five days of competition, came out on top 6-5 over the Ryerson Rams. Waterloo beat Western 5-3 to win bronze.

The UOIT women's team finished round robin play with a 2-5 record. The Ridgebacks finished ahead of Algoma and tied with Trent, both teams they were beat by. Four of UOIT's five losses came by two or less points, as a few missed shots decided the Ridgebacks' fate.

UOIT handed Toronto (6-1) their only loss of the round robin, showing how close competition was during the championship.

Laurier narrowly defeated Queen's in the gold medal match 5-3. Brock would end up winning bronze, edging out Lakehead 6-5.

2015 marks the only time UOIT advanced to the quarter-finals, when the men's team finished round robin play with a 5-1 record.

The six medaling teams advanced to the national championship. The U SPORTS curling championship is hosted by the University of Alberta in March at the Leduc Recreation Centre. U of A will also be hosting the 2018 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship and 2018 CCAA Curling Canada Championship.
