KINGSTON, Ont. – Two Queen's Gaels goals in the final 10 minutes of play on Wednesday ended the UOIT men's soccer team's push for the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA east.
The Gaels walked away with a 3-1 victory over the Ridgebacks.
Heading into the match, UOIT sat four points out of the final playoff spot, needing at least a draw to give themselves a chance heading into their final game on Saturday.
After a goal-less opening 45 minutes, a goal by Brevin MacKay put the Gaels ahead in the 57
th minute. Just a minute later,
Quintyn Walcott (Bridgetown, Barbados) scored his second goal of the season to put the Ridgebacks on even ground again.
Until the 83
rd minute a point looked within reach for UOIT – who had seven shots on goal, to Queen's 14 at the end of the night – but Zachary Toupin beat
Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) for the eventual game-winning goal.
Nicholas Theodorakakis added the insurance marker in the 87
th minute.
Miller made 11 saves in the loss, while Alexander Dimock made five for the Gaels.
Saturday, UOIT hosts the Trent Excalibur at home to wrap up their 2018 season. Prior to their 3:15 p.m. kick off the Ridgebacks will recognize their graduating seniors with a brief ceremony.
