MONTREAL – The first half of the UOIT men's hockey heritage trip to Montreal did not go as planned as the Concordia Stingers ran away with a 6-2 victory over the Ridgebacks.
OUA leading scorer Anthony Beauregard could not be stopped as he was in on every Concordia goal ending the night with two goals and four assists.
The heritage weekend involved the Ridgebacks getting off the bus and traveling to Montreal on a train. UOIT will close out the heritage weekend road-trip with a game against one of the oldest Universities in Canada as they play the No. 6 ranked McGill Redmen on Saturday night before returning to Oshawa.
The first period was all square until Beauregard scored a shorthanded goal 14 seconds before the break to give the Stingers a 1-0 lead. This is the second straight game UOIT has allowed a shorthanded goal.
Early in the second period, Beauregard would get on the scoresheet once again, but this time picking up a pair of assists. The OUA leading scoring would set up Brandon Kosik and Massima Carozza to give the Stingers a 3-0 lead six minutes into the period.
Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) would cut the lead to 3-1 with a power play goal as
Anthony Latina (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Brennan Roy (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) recorded assists.
But as he did all night, Beauregard would strike back with 30 seconds to go in the frame, restoring the Stingers three goal lead.
Trailing 5-1 after Concordia scored less than minute into the third, Robinson managed to get his second goal of the night and his team leading fifth of the year, but that was all offence UOIT would generate. The Stingers would add one more power play goal with 1:32 left on the clock to secure their third straight win.
Despite eight goals being scored, both teams struggled on the power play as each team went 1-for-9. Concordia outshot UOIT 42-33.
UOIT has dropped three straight games and are holding on to the final playoff position, leading the Laurentian Voyageurs by just one point.
Following Saturday's game against McGill, UOIT will return home for a weekend set against Queen's (Friday) and Ottawa (Saturday). McGill is in second place in the OUA eastern conference standings with a 7-2-0 record.
