OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team won their second game of the weekend after a 2-1 overtime victory over the York Lions.
Fourth year veteran
Mariah Wilson of Cobourg was sent in on a 2-on-1 after a nice stretch pass from
Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.). With the defender going for a poke check, Wilson fired a shot that beat Lauren Dubie 3:53 into the overtime period.
With the win, UOIT improved to 2-1-2-0 on the season and jumped into fourth place in the conference standings.
Making her second start in goal for UOIT,
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Que.) made 26 saves including 18 in the second period to lead UOIT to victory. In her two starts this season, Tessier has made 48 saves on 49 shots for a .980 save percentage.
Mia Rogers (Keswick, Ont.) scored her first goal as a Ridgeback in OUA conference play as she got UOIT on the board 8:09 in the third period after the puck took a weird deflection off a rebound. Wilson and
Nicole Augello (Bolton, Ont.) picked up assists on the play.
The lead was short-lived as Kelsey McHolm got her first OUA goal for York three minutes later as she snuck home a rebound, beating Tessier for the first time this season.
York would end up outshooting UOIT 27-23, with the Ridgebacks holding a 12-4 advantage in the third period.
The Lions would have the only two power play opportunities in the game but were shut down on both occasions.
UOIT will continue their home stand next week with games against Laurentian (Friday) and Nipissing (Saturday).
