Ridgebacks split weekend on the road after loss to Brock

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Despite outshooting the Brock Badgers on Sunday, the UOIT women's hockey team lost 5-1 to take a weekend split on the road.

The Ridgebacks are now 1-2-0 on the season.

Coming off her second career OUA shutout on Saturday against the Waterloo Warriors, Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) started in goal for UOIT, but took the loss in her 26-save performance against Brock.

At the other end of the ice, Jensen Murphy turned aside 32 Ridgebacks shots for the victory.

Christina Ieradi started her scoring for Brock at the 19:34 mark of the first period, with her power play marker giving the Badgers a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Brock held a slight 10-9 shot advantage.

Ieradi's second goal at 11:50 of the second period was also on the man-advantage after a Grace Donaldson (St. Thomas, Ont.) hooking penalty. Again, this was the lone goal of the period, with Brock holding the 2-0 lead – even though UOIT outshot the Badgers 10-7 in second.

The third Brock goal also came from an Ieradi, this time from Amanda Ieradi, midway through the third period.

Kassiday Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) finally got the Ridgebacks on the board with 3:59 to play, but less than a minute later Hunter Accursi reinstated the Badgers three-goal lead.

Accursi added a shorthanded, empty-net goal, with 16 seconds to go to cap off the afternoon.

Next weekend the Ridgebacks return home to host the Guelph Gryphons and York Lions at the Campus Ice Centre. Puck drop on Thursday night is 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's game gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
