OSHAWA, Ont. – Thursday night the UOIT women's hockey team hosted the Guelph Gryphons as a part of their Think Pink campaign during the month of October in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Sick Kids Foundation.
It was a special night off the ice with the fundraising efforts, but it was also special on the ice as the Ridgebacks came out on top defeating the two-time defending OUA champion Gryphons 1-0.
Over the 11 year history of the program, UOIT has struggled against the Gryphons holding a 2-23 all-time record entering Thursday night's game.
Both teams had their fair share of chances in a tight game. Ridgebacks goalie,
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Ont.), stopped all 22 shots that came her way earning her first career OUA shutout and win. Gryphons goalie, Aurore Beaulieu, also had a great performance stopping 19 of the 20 shots she faced.
The lone goal of the game that earned UOIT their second win of the season came early in the second period. Rookie,
Jamie Bulleid (Waterdown, Ont.), ripped one from the face off dot, going bar down to give the Ridgebacks the lead.
"It's exciting to get my first OUA goal and for our team to battle through a lot of penalties and still win. It feels great," said Bulleid.
There were a lot of penalties throughout the game, with the Ridgebacks racking up 12 minutes of their own. Despite the amount of penalties taken, they were able to successfully execute their penalty kill and shutdown the Gryphons.
The night was a special one for many people as it was in support of breast cancer. In particular it meant a lot to Bulleid, "It hits close to home for me. My aunt had breast cancer and she was thankfully able to over come it, so it is really nice to get to show our support."
UOIT will not have a lot of time to rest between games as they play the York Lions on Saturday in another home game. Puck drop is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Campus Ice Centre.
