SUDBURY, Ont. – Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) recorded a hat-trick including scoring the overtime winner as the UOIT women's hockey team beat Laurentian 6-5 in Sudbury.
Earning their fourth straight win and second of the weekend, UOIT (4-3-4-3) jumps into seventh place in the OUA standings.
One minute into overtime,
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) streaked down the ice and fed the puck to Nauboris in the slot who buried the game-winner. This was the third-year winger's first career OUA hat-trick as she capped off a six-point weekend, having recorded three assists in UOIT's 4-3 victory over the No. 7 ranked Nipissing Lakers on Saturday.
Laurentian and UOIT combined for 11 goals, the most scored in any OUA game this season.
It looked as if the Ridgebacks were going to win in regulation after
Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) gave UOIT a 5-4 lead at 13:45 of the third. With 39 seconds left and the Voyageurs net empty, Taylor Weber managed to beat UOIT goaltender
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) to send the game into overtime.
Despite UOIT scoring six goals, Forchielli was the only other Ridgeback besides Nauboris to have a multi-point game as she ended up with a goal and an assist.
Shanelle Doucette (Bowmanville, Ont.) and
Nicole Augello (Bolton, Ont.) were the other goal scorers for UOIT. Augello's second period goal was the first of her OUA career.
With an assist in the first period,
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) extended her point streak to six games. Cavell extended her point streak to five games with an assist on the overtime winner.
Laurentian outshot UOIT 42-27, as Hughes made 37 saves in her fourth win of the season. Hughes is 4-1 in five starts of her freshman campaign.
UOIT will put their win-streak on the line at home next Saturday against the first-place Guelph Gryphons followed by a game against the York Lions on Sunday. Both games will be themed "Pink at the Rink" as the Ridgebacks join team Emma and fundraise for the SickKids foundation.
Puck drop for both games at the Campus Ice Centre is 3:30 p.m.
