Ridgebacks push No. 4 ranked Gryphons to the limit

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team had their four-game win streak come to an end on Saturday after a 2-1 loss to the No. 4 ranked Guelph Gryphons.

It was the first of back-to-back 'Pink at the Rink' games at the Campus Ice Centre where the Ridgebacks join team Emma in a fundraising effort in support of the SickKids Foundation. UOIT will take on York on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Campus Ice Centre with puck drop set for 3:30 p.m.

Kaitlin Lowy, who sits third in OUA scoring with 20 points, scored both of Guelph's goals in the victory. The game winner came just 35 seconds into the third period as she beat UOIT goaltender Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) from the slot.

OUA athlete of the week Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) was the lone goal scorer for UOIT. The third-year winger took advantage of a Guelph turnover at 6:07 of the third to cut the lead in half. Nauboris has 11 goals this season to sit fourth in the OUA.

UOIT captain Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) picked up an assist on the goal, pushing her point streak to six games. Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) was held off the scoresheet for the first time in seven games.

Charette, who made her first start in over two months, stopped 26 Guelph shots on net.
Valerie Lamenta made 25 saves in her 11th win of the year.

UOIT (7-5-3) sits in tenth place but are four points out of fifth in the conference standings. Guelph is in first place with a 14-2-1 record.
