TORONTO – That's more like it.
After a pair of losses to start the OUA season, the UOIT men's soccer team had their best performance of the season on Sunday afternoon as they tied the No. 7 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues 1-1 at Varsity Stadium.
Heading into the match, Toronto had an unblemished 3-0-0 record while outscoring their opponents 10-0.
After a Toronto goal by Nirun Sivananthan in the 44th minute, it looked as if the Varsity Blues were on their way to a fourth straight win.
The Ridgebacks fought hard for the entire game and were rewarded for their efforts in the 66
th minute as
Fabio Campoli (Frosinone, Italy) had a clean break on goal and scored to tie the game at 1-1. Campoli has both of UOIT's goals this season.
UOIT pressed for the game winner with two corner kicks and a shot on target in the final ten minutes, but the Varsity Blues managed to hold off the Ridgeback attack for the draw.
Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) made five saves for UOIT as shots finished 11-5 in favour of Toronto.
The Ridgebacks will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 7 as they take on the Durham Lords in the eighth annual Campus Cup.
UOIT's OUA home opener will be on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they host the Queen's Gaels followed by a home match on Sunday against the RMC Paladins. Kickoff for both games is at 3:15 p.m.
