OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's soccer team had numerous opportunities late in an emotion-filled home opener, but were unable to catch the Queen's Gaels who spoiled the day with a 3-1 win.
Queen's controlled much of the play to start the match, outshooting UOIT 8-1 in the first half and earning six corner kicks, while the Ridgebacks had none. The opportunities ended in a 2-0 advantage for Queen's at the half.
Goals came from Tonko Bacelic in the 18
th minute and Andrew Martin in the 41
st. Frustration was mounting for UOIT as
Tristan Maenza was handed a yellow card late in the half, but the Ridgebacks came back in the second half controlling the play and having better opportunities.
Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.), who started in goal for UOIT, left the game at halftime.
Karan Thaker (Brampton, Ont.) finished the game in goal.
The Ridgebacks outshot Queen's 11-3 in the second half, but it wasn't until the 78
th minute when
Erik Petrovic (Sombor, Serbia) took a ball from
Jacob Sooklal (Brooklin, Ont.) and beat Kyle Lazinger to cut the Gaels lead in half.
With UOIT pressuring late in the match the Gaels took advantage of the short-staffed backfield for the Ridgebacks to beat Thaker in extra time.
UOIT will return to action on Sunday afternoon with they host the RMC Paladins at Vaso's Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
