THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Winning two games in a row at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay is a tough thing to do. The No. 4 ranked UOIT men's hockey team were a prime example of that on Saturday night falling 7-2 to Lakehead after beating the Thunderwolves 3-2 on Friday.
With the weekend split, UOIT is 8-2-0 on the year and remain two points ahead of Concordia for first place in the OUA eastern conference standings as the Stingers fell 2-1 to Ottawa.
Lakehead dominated the game from the get-go as they shot out to a 5-0 lead three minutes into the second period.
Anthony Latina (Scarborough, Ont.) got his first goal with the Ridgebacks and
Mitch Bennett (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) ended the game with another but it wasn't nearly enough in the lopsided loss.
Thunder Bay native Kelin Ainsworth was unstoppable in the early stages of the game as he recorded one goal and four assists on the Thunderwolves first five goals in the game.
Lakehead's offence was spread out as they had seven different goal scorers with Justin Sefton, Patrick Murphy, Dylan Butler, Brennen Dubchak, E.J. Faust, Carson Dubchak and Ainsworth finding the back of the net.
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.), who earned the win in relief on Friday, allowed all seven goals against on 30 shots.
Lakehead was 2-for-9 with the man advantage and UOIT was 1-for-7.
The Ridgebacks return home next weekend for two games against the Western Mustangs (Friday) and Guelph Gryphons (Saturday). Puck drop for both games is 7:30 p.m.
