WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team could not find a way to light the lamp on Friday night as they were shutout by the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 on the road.
Veteran goaltender Stephanie Sluys stood on her head as she stopped all 23 UOIT shots she faced, including nine in the final period. One of the Ridgebacks best chances came with a minute remaining in the game but
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) could not bury a rebound at the top of the crease following a
Mariah Wilson (Cobourg, Ont.) attempt to level the score.
Amy Barnard would add an empty net goal with one second remaining to secure the Warriors' victory.
Making her first start of the season,
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) was impressive in goal making 30 saves in the losing effort. Maryn Caragata scored the game-winner ten minutes into the period as they capitalized off a Ridgeback turnover.
Both power players were inept despite a number of scoring opportunities. UOIT was 0-for-7 with the man advantage while Waterloo went 0-for-9.
Despite the Ridgebacks earning their first win in program history against Waterloo during their inaugural season, the Warriors have simply dominated the head-to-head matchup. You have to go back to Nov. 20, 2010 to find UOIT's last win over Waterloo.
UOIT (0-2-1) will look for their first win of the season back in Waterloo on Sunday when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks (0-1-1). Puck drop at the Waterloo Rec Complex is 7:30 p.m.
