WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 road victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night.
Beating Laurier has been a rare feat for the program having only earned one win in their previous 25 attempts. However, on Sunday night the Ridgebacks played with a chip on their shoulder as they outshot the Golden Hawks 32-11 en route to their first win on the road against Laurier.
Despite outplaying the Golden Hawks, the game was hanging in the balance tied 1-1 with five minutes left in regulation. Determined to break the deadlock, hard work by
Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) paid off as she crashed the net and scored her third goal of the season. The goal would stand as the game winner as UOIT was able to shut down the Golden Hawks offence down the stretch, holding them to just two third period shots.
Freshmen
Nicole Augello (Bolton, Ont.) &
Nicole Zabel (Palmerston, Ont.) would draw assists on the game winner, marking their first career OUA points.
UOIT needed a comeback effort in the game as Laurier's Danielle Wark scored her first goal of the season with five minutes left in the opening frame. The Ridgebacks would level the score on a second period power play when
Chelsea Ball's (Maple, Ont.) outside shot found the back of the net. Nauboris and
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) earned assists on the Ridgebacks first power play marker of the season.
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) made her second consecutive start in goal and stopped 10 shots in the win. In her first appearance of the season, she allowed just one goal against on 31 shots by the Waterloo Warriors.
UOIT (1-2-1) will look ahead to their first home "school day game" set for Friday, Oct. 28 against Toronto (2-1-0). Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre will be 11:30 a.m.
Laurier (0-2-1) is now the lone team in the OUA without a win.
