OSHAWA, Ont. – The No. 9 ranked UOIT women's soccer team extended their win-streak to nine games on Sunday with a 3-0 shutout over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
After starting the season with a 3-1 loss to the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees and a 2-2 tie against Carleton, the Ridgebacks have rolled off nine straight victories for their longest win-streak in program history. In 2014, the Ridgebacks started the season on a 13-game unbeaten streak that included two ties.
The win moves UOIT (9-1-1) just one game back of the Gee-Gees (9-0-2) who tied Queen's and RMC this weekend.
Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) got UOIT on the board 33 minutes into the game as she finished off a pass from
Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.).
UOIT dominated the first half firing 13 shots compared to just one by Toronto.
In the second half,
Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.) got her second goal in as many games, one-timing a pass from
Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) in the 62
nd minute.
Subbing in during the second half,
Sarah Harvey (Bowmanville, Ont.) got on the scoresheet as she found herself on a breakaway and chipped it in the bottom right corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) stopped all three Toronto shots on target for the Ridgebacks eighth shutout of the win-streak. Tori Edgar made 10 saves in the losing effort.
Shots would end up 22-4 in favour of UOIT. The Ridgebacks also had seven corner kicks compared to just two for Toronto.
The Ridgebacks will be back at Vaso's Field next weekend for games against Nipissing (Saturday) and Laurentian (Sunday). Both contests start at noon.
