Ridgebacks preseason opener ends in a 0-0 draw

OSHAWA, Ont. – Coming off an OUA bronze medal and trip to nationals in 2014, the UOIT women's soccer team has big expectations this year. Despite looking a bit rusty in their preseason opener, the Ridgebacks managed to salvage a draw against a scrappy Windsor Lancers squad at Vaso's Field Friday afternoon.

Making her Ridgeback debut in net, Helen Frampton looked confident going on to record eight saves for the cleansheet.

Her biggest test came in the 66th minute when third year forward Cassie Chretien had a point blank shot on net. Frampton was able to stop the ball but gave up a second chance. Chretien fired another attempt on goal that defender Rachel Matthews blocked to preserve the shutout.

With the departure of several veterans from last year's roster, the Ridgeback coaching staff had to shift players to different positions that included moving Matthews to the defensive unit.

UOIT looked as if they broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 63rd minute when Cassandra Sribny found the back of the net. Unfortunately for UOIT, the lineman's flag was up and the play was called offside.

Shots on target finished 11-8 in favour of the Ridgebacks.

UOIT's second and final preseason match will take place on Sunday afternoon when they travel to McMaster for a 2 p.m. kick-off. The Ridgebacks OUA regular season opener is set for Saturday, Aug. 29 at home against Nipissing.
