OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team saw their first shootout action of their 2015-16 campaign on Friday night in North York. Despite scoring twice, UOIT fell short of a victory as York won 2-1 in the tenth round of the shootout.
The Ridgebacks (3-1-7-1) pick up a single point in the shootout loss, as they head into the exam break having earned points in two consecutive games. However, UOIT is on the outside looking in when it comes to the OUA postseason picture as they sit in 11
th place.
UOIT opened up scoring against York when
Mariah Wilson (Cobourg, Ont.) notched her first goal of the season just four minutes into the game.
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) recorded an assist.
It looked as if the Ridgebacks would hold on to that lead heading into intermission but York would catch a lucky break when Kristen Barbara banked the puck off of the back of
Tori Campbell's (Saskatoon, Sask.) leg and into the net.
The goaltenders would steal the show over the next fifty minutes, ten of which were overtime, as they combined to make 49 more saves. Campbell would finish the night with 36 saves while CIS athlete of the week Megan Lee had 35.
The Ridgebacks had plenty of chances to break the deadlock down the stretch, but Lee managed to come up with a number of key stops when the Ridgebacks did not hit the iron.
After York goals,
Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.) scored in the third round of the shootout to keep the Ridgebacks alive, as did
Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) in the eighth round. After Jenna Gray beat Campbell in round 10, Victoria MacKeznie (Toronto, Ont.) was unable to finish off a nice move to extend the shootout one more round.
UOIT's next action will not be until Jan. 9
th, when they are back on the road to take on the Windsor Lancers. The Ridgebacks beat Windsor 5-3 last weekend in Oshawa.
